My Students

We need card stock to help us learn how to spell words instead of just memorizing them.

I teach a first grade gifted and talented class at a high poverty school in New York City.

There are 24 children in the class, all with extremely diverse needs. They are some amazing thinkers. They have a love for learning and they have lots of great ideas to share all the time.

My Project

I work very hard to differentiate the instruction so that I am teaching each child on a level that is right for him or her. One way that I differentiate is by giving each child weekly words, using the Words Their Way program. These words are based on a spelling assessment which shows me specifically what types of spelling patterns the children have mastered and which they need to work on. Each week I create and print on my computer words for the children to work with. I print the words onto a sheet of card stock for the children to cut out to make little word cards. For a week, they work with those word cards through word sorts and other word study activities. Instead of memorizing how to spell words and then forgetting after the spelling test, my kids work with the words so much that they truly learn how to spell them. I purchase the card stock with my own money and it is expensive. I go through packs of it so quickly to give my children just-right words to work with.

By helping my class get lots of card stock, I will be able to continue providing each student with very individualized word cards with spelling patterns that they need to work with.

I have already spent so much of my own money on my classroom and it is hard for me to keep purchasing the card stock that I really do need. The reading and writing of my children will continue to grow because of the card stock word cards they are able to sort and study.
