My Students

Many people believe that our school was a prison before it was turned into a high school. This rumor mainly stems from the fact that we have no windows! Imagine spending eight hours a day in a building with no natural light. Now imagine taking photos in a dark place like this.

My students are mainly from minority groups, with the largest percentage being of Black and Hispanic cultural backgrounds.

Many of them live below the poverty line and a large population live in low income housing projects. Getting through high school is a struggle for them. Many are unprepared to enter 9th grade, since they only have an average of a 4th grade reading level. Those that make it to senior year status are very proud of themselves, and should be.

My Project

The seniors are the only ones allowed to participate in any type of celebratory events. There are outside events which cost money to attend, and free inside events called "theme days". It is our job as the yearbook staff to cover all of these events and capture as many students as possible. Since many students do not have the money to go on the costly off campus events it is important that we include them in as much as we can, so that the expensive yearbook is worth it. The yearbook budget is small, and we have lost advertisers in recent years due to claims of personal financial hardship, so the students pay for the majority of the book cost. We would like to keep costs low by decreasing the size and including more beautiful content, like high quality photographs.

Have you ever tried to capture a fantastic photo shot in darkness with an old camera?

Well that is all my students have. In fact, its my old camera and I have to hand it over filled with family photos to them to use. Having these cameras would make our book so beautiful! Even in black and white print. I could teach photography and share the cameras. They would be walking away with a new creative skill... and they certainly deserve it.
