My Students

My newspaper staff are a cohort of diverse, intelligent, and hardworking students from around the New York City Metropolitan area. Our school is a selective, public, college preparatory school with a focus on science, math, and engineering that provides a challenging academic experience that prepares students for careers in science, math, and engineering.

As a teacher in a low income school, I see the challenges students are faced with both inside and outside of the classroom.

Many of our students are the first in their families to attend school, are from non-English speaking families, and receive free or reduced rate lunch and transportation fares based on their socioeconomic status. Due to budget cuts, our students don't have or are forced to use outdated equipment which in-turn restricts the learning that can occur in the classroom. Regardless of these challenges, attendance is very high and we have an extremely high college attendance rate.

My Project

With these digital cameras and sim cards, we will be able to document the amazing work our students do. Being on the school newspaper requires us to update the school and our community about everything happening! Having pictures is extremely important, especially since not all of our parents and guardians who support our students speak and reads English.

With the written word, we are also able to promote events to help support our students.

Recently, we did articles covering sporting events occurring, the school play, and the garden. Since starting the newspaper, more community members have been in attendance due to the updates given in the paper.
