My Students

"A picture is worth a thousand words." I love being able to capture moments of inquisitiveness, joy, and excitement through photographs as the children in my class explore and learn in our play-based classroom.

My students are from diverse families who live in Harlem.

They are eager to learn through hands-on learning activities. Many children especially enjoy building at the block center. Due to space limitations, we are unable to keep their structures up for long periods of time. They will often ask me to take a picture of the structure to capture their hard work. Their smile will often exude pride in their work. Our school is currently serving Pre-Kindergarten to 3rd grade. Each year we will add a grade until 8th grade. We have an amazing student body, and have parents, teachers, and administrative staff that truly care about children.

My Project

The students themselves will not directly use this digital camera, however, they will certainly benefit from it. The children love being photographed. They will often ask to see pictures on the digital camera after they are taken. They also often ask me to take pictures of the structures they build before it is time to clean up. Throughout the school year, I post pictures of students engaging in activities so that their guardians can get a glimpse of their day in the classroom. I also take pictures of student work, so that I can send home original copies for parents to keep. These photographs are used as evidence to show student growth in various content areas. Lastly, I will print these photographs to place throughout the classroom. I know the children will be excited to see their pictures printed and displayed.

Our current digital camera is broken.

A new high-quality digital camera would allow me to capture moments of learning and joy. Photographs will be used as a form of assessment and will also allow guardians to get a glimpse into their child's day at school. I will also print pictures to post in the classroom, so that the children can reflect on past activities and experiences. Ultimately these photographs will capture positive memories of pre-kindergarten that I know they will cherish.
