Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Power! Voice! Conviction! Change! Through examining different characters in literature, my young men and women want to engage in creating an archive of people in their communities that have affected great change, beginning with women who have often gone unrecognized.

Our school is a Title I public school (over 70% receive free lunch) in New York City.

Our students are Latino, African-American, Caribbean-American, Asian and White. We are a small school that values the ideals of a strong community and school is a place where our students enjoy coming as they feel safe and part of something special. Our curriculum is rigorous with a focus on college prep, but we also encourage deep critical thinking about social issues and change. We want our students to be active participants in creating a better future for themselves, their communities and the world.

My Project

Throughout the semester small groups will be taking turns with the iPad mini to document, film, research and edit short films about a woman in their community they have identified as a maker in their community. This iPad mini is easy for kids to handle and the editing program is easy to use. Only one is necessary because as we continue to engage in the study of other texts this will be an ongoing project throughout the semester and all the films will be shown at the end of the semester in a mini film festival. Students will learn important interviewing skills, technological skills, and most importantly how to make connections between the literature and theories they are studying and people in their own communities. Furthermore, they will also incorporate issues about the women's movement they are studying in history class as we have coordinated our curriculum to overlap throughout the year.

Sometimes the study of literature in the classroom stays in the classroom.

This on going project will allow students to actively engage with the literature in class and bring it to life as they explore the lives of people in their own communities. Beyond creating a hands on exciting activity, it will allow students to see how people in their community are using their power and voice to improve their lives and the lives of others.
