Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

A quote that I feel captures science education comes from T.S. Eliot, "We must never cease from exploration. And the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we began and know the place for the first time." There is so much for my students to learn about their place in the universe!

We are a rural school district in central Washington.

All three schools are on a single campus, with about four hundred students at the high school. A lot of the students' parents are field laborers with limited proficiency in English. The percentage of students who qualify for free lunch is so high that it is cheaper to give all students free lunch than track the money from the ones who do not qualify. Approximately 80% of our students are Mexican. The vast majority of the students appreciate the value of a good education and work to take advantage of what is being offered to them. They benefit immensely from hands-on activities.

My Project

Last year, I was able to purchase a superior telescope with donations from this website. That telescope was the seed that allowed a brand new astronomy club to be established. My students have now seen planets, nebulae, galaxies, and stars in a new and more focused light (pun intended). They have traveled to an observatory and received a vision of high level astronomy. They are eager for more. This camera will allow students to capture images of space objects at a much higher level of resolution and detail. They will be able to transfer the image to a laptop, easing the crowding and waiting that occurs to get access to the eyepiece. They will be able to collaborate with real scientists in obtaining valuable field data to map asteroids.

Thanks to the relatively new telescope, astronomy is no longer just a book subject for many of my students, but a live science that they can be part of.

This camera will take the new found passion for astronomy that a number of students have to the next level. It will allow those students who have a passion for photography to combine two fields. Most significantly, it will allow students to engage in work as real scientists, collecting field data and contributing to the scientific community.
