My Students

Have you ever opened a book only to stare blankly at the pages? Well my students face that challenge everyday. They are unable to access the information before them because they have not yet mastered the necessary English words that would allow them access.

My students have moved from countries far away with languages very different from English to settle here.

They are a diverse group of boys and girls who have brave earthquakes, poverty or just a change of scene to become a part of this melting pot of 30. Our school sits in the inner city of New York where our students are surrounding by stimuli that are not focused on building their imagination through literature.

My Project

If provided with this leveled library my students, some of whom have had very little access to text, will be able to engage with wonderfully written and illustrated text that will fuel their imagination. As the teacher I will be able to facilitate book discussions where students can contribute because the text they have is at their reading level. Currently my students take books from the library that they are unable to read because the books are levels above their ability to read in English. As a result classroom conversations are limited to those who can read their chosen text. This library will allow all the students to feel that they have something to contribute. It will allow students who never speak to feel confident enough to share their experiences of the language.

Providing students with the opportunity to read independently will bridge the gap that currently separate our ESL students from our native speakers.

It will allow them to be able to access knowledge that would otherwise be lost to them.
