Help Mr. Grabski

Imagine having the ability to film your science project at home then upload it to your laptop for editing, and finally “publish” your project to share with fellow students on an iPod! That’s one of the many technology goals our Science Department has set for the students we serve. I teach 7th & 8th grade science at a traditional junior high (grades 7-9) with a student population of 860. My classroom serves a wide variety of learners, from Learning Disabled to English language Learners to “gifted” students with a variety of ethnic backgrounds in a small urban city.

A few years ago our school was the most technologically deficient school in our district (1 high school, 2 junior high schools, and 9 elementary schools). As department chair, to better prepare our students with 21st Century skills, I have organized a fundraising campaign with a goal of raising $71,000 to enable our department to gain the technology needed to give our students the 21st Century Skills they will need to succeed in a global economy. To date we have raised almost $59,000! By utilizing the technology that students of today enjoy using we will be better able to reach our students with our science curriculum. Studies have shown increased student engagement and knowledge retention when allowed to use technology in a meaningful educational setting. We currently have 1 Kodak Zi6 pocket video digital camera and 13 iPods. This gives us a very limited opportunity to allow our students to utilize this type of curriculum integrated technology. However, when given the opportunity to use this limited resource students have produced wonderful projects.

Two more Kodak Zi6 cameras would triple our capacity to utilize this technology and increase the 21st Century Technology Skills that our students so desperately need to succeed in today’s world. Students work in teams for most projects. With classes as high as 30 students, these two cameras will significantly increase my ability to share this opportunity with more students.

You can make it possible for my students to obtain the 21st Century Technology Skills they need to become productive members of society when the graduate. Gone are the days when teachers stand in front of the room and “pour knowledge” into students heads through lectures. In order to reach the modern student, we need to effectively incorporate meaningful technology into our curriculum that will meet the needs of the wide variety of learners in our school. This project will allow that to happen…..but only with your help!
