Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Teachers are the gateway to success. There is a fine line between disparity and hope. I plan to be a glimmer of hope for the students I serve regardless of socioeconomic status, color or gender. My school sits in the inner city of Houston. We are a Title I school. Our school serves students with high numbers or high percentages of children from low-income families where resources and parental support are limited. I truly believe that caring teachers willing to go the extra mile makes all the difference in a child's life. It is my job to ensure that all children meet challenging state academic standards regardless of what they may face.

Push to be greater than others expectations of you is something that I stress to them often.

Overcoming obstacles is what builds true character and make great leaders. These students are eager and ready to learn because I set the tone. I create a safe environment where we can share, debate and create without being ridiculed for being different. I share with them that I too made it out of a Title I school and neighborhood and that demographics do not define your success. Success begins with you!

My Project

Elementary: the years of your life that lay the foundation. What better way to capture those precious moments with a year book. This project is designed to teach students in grades 3 through 5 critical thinking, writing and analytical skills while capturing the fun of the school.

The materials (a Chromebook, cameras, memory cards, and digital voice recorders) will give them real world experience.

How many students from Title I schools will get the opportunity to use a point and shoot a camera, write cool things about their teachers and friends and download pictures to a laptop to edit and proof them. We want the students to learn what it is like to be a journalist by interviewing students while honing in on the details. At the end of the year, the students will be able to see their labor of love and take ownership of there project that they created themselves.
