This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Hola and welcome to my project! I teach Spanish 1 & 4 along with Latinos in Action at West High School. My students come from a mixed income background. The majority are from low income/disadvantaged homes. They are trying to learn Spanish as a second or third language. I want to encourage them to read in Spanish and become more comfortable with the language, while practicing what we learn in class. Reading is the best way for them to learn and practice what we are learning.

I am a 1st year teacher and I am trying to build my library of books and engaging activities for my students, will you help me?

My Project

Studies show that it takes people about 7 years to become fluent in a language. We have 4 years with students in high school. Every class that I have my students counts. The more students engage in Spanish through different venues the better chance they have of retaining what they are learning. Students need to speak, listen, read, and write in Spanish; with these materials I believe that they will do just that.

Students will have a chance to read in class every day and discuss their books and magazines with peers.

They will have writing prompts to help them process their reading, which they will share with peers.

I also want to incorporate educational games to help reinforce what we are learning in class in a fun and engaging way.
