This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The three economic systems of the world are introduced at the 10th grade leve and many students struggle to understand how they operate within society. Therefore, I feel like developing a hands on experience would best help my students to understand these complex concepts.

My lesson has three different set ups for the game, which represent the different economic systems.

Capitalism gives players in the beginning different amount of money in the beginning to show the different classes of people (upper, middle, and lower) and the game operates the it always has, students will pay until all players are knocked out except the last one or until time’s up.

Socialism will have players start the same amount of money, however a portion of their $200 will have to go to taxes, this tax money will go to purchasing community properties such as the water company and the railroads. Again, playing until time is up.

Finally, communism will be played with a community pot of money that the group will need to decide what is purchased. If the community votes no, then the property is purchased by the government, but if they vote yes then they will buy it. Rent will still need to be paid on government property as it is on personal property.

Each time, students will document their experience and what they feel are the pros and cons of the system.
