My Students

I starting teaching here last year, and I am so lucky to be on staff. Our student population is over 70% economically disadvantaged, with a majority of our students living in rural areas who are bused in to our consolidated high school. Their ability to buy supplies for themselves is minimal at times. The school and teachers often buy extra supplies to have on hand for students so that learning can continue and a lack of materials for class isn't an issue.

Many of these students live with one parent or no parents (a grandparent or family member has taken on the responsibility of raising them).

I've worked in a district similar to this before, and many of them just need a place to belong. They need a place to feel safe and loved.

My Project

Canterbury Tales has always been a little hard for students to get into because of the language, and because learning about people "back in the day" seems boring in the beginning. I'm hoping that by giving my kids the same experience that the pilgrims went through, this year will be different. We'll be taking "trips," documenting our journey, and earning badges to show how far we've gone. They are used to showing their lives on the internet, so hopefully that part of this activity will translate to the literature. Chaucer was trying to show a broad spectrum of society when he wrote Canterbury Tales, and once students get used to the language, they tend to enjoy it, finding some crazy characters, and some people they wish were lost along the way.

The hardest part of teaching this unit is finding a way to show students that those thing still apply, just in a different context.

For many of my students, the ideas presented by the pilgrims are foreign to them, such as traveling with strangers to a holy site. We make fake stained glass because, despite their religious affiliation, most students can agree that the churches were beautiful, whether they would travel to them for religious reasons or not. And we do group hunts for things because, despite their protests about being with other people, most students will follow others around campus for the chance to win a sticker! When you explain these ideas in the context of Chaucer, it usually clicks for kids and they start to understand why people did some of the activities described in the text. I'm excited to be able to create more fun things this year like actual badges, large "stained glass" pieces, and fake passports to wherever their trips take them!
