Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn." Benjamin Franklin

The majority of my students come from low-income households.

Both parents have to work to provide basic needs for their family and still experience economic limitations. My students qualify for the free federal lunch program and are English language learners. Our school is a Title 1 school which means resources are limited.

My preschool students are full of life! They come to school eager to learn everyday! They look forward to socializing with their friends and learning academically. I know at home they are facing hardships but, in school I hope to provide an enriched, hands-on experience for them where their learning will be meaningful.

My classroom is the student's first school experience therefore, I am setting the foundation for the rest of their education.

My Project

Preschoolers need to see it, hear it, speak it, and then do it! They learn math best through lessons that include visuals and many opportunities for hands-on activities.

Research shows that preschoolers build on their number knowledge from their understanding and mastery of counting.

This is a critical time for them to master counting small quantities so when they grow older they will be able to manage larger sets.

Help me give my students developmentally appropriate manipulatives so that they can continue counting and learning from home. The early language activity boxes have a variety of activities that will build on math skills like comparing, sorting and matching objects and at the same time reinforce language for our English language learners. As we continue to meet and learn via zoom, I can use the pocket chart number and alphabet cards to show math word problem to the students. I will read the word problem to them, they will repeat it, and then students will solve the word problem at home with their teddy bear counters. Not only will the teddy bear counters be used for word problems but, they will also be used to review classifying, counting, one to one correspondence and measurement. The magnetic numbers and the mini rekenreks will assist as visuals for forming number equations and number representation. Since the beads on the rekenreks come in two different colors, they will visually represent the groups in addition and subtraction operations. These may seem as basic counting concepts but, they serve an important role in the developmental progress in our preschool students.

Thank you for reading and considering my project to help our young students continue to learn during this pandemic .
