My Students

My kindergartners are learning about the world around them. Many have very poor language skills and are unable to express themselves orally. Color pictures used during "Gallery Walks" develop and enhance oral language skills in English language learners.

My students approach life with the enthusiasm and curiosity that all five-year-old children seem to have in abundance.

Despite living in a low socioeconomic area where their parents struggle to make ends meet, they are incredibly hopeful and looking forward to the future. My students' parents want the best education possible for them but due to financial constraints, many cannot afford to have books, puzzles & other educational toys at home. It is up to me & the school to provide these wonderful, amazing, eager and bright kids with a wide variety of learning tools. We are a Title 1 school, which means that we do get funds to improve the academic achievement of the disadvantage, but not enough to provide every classroom with all the "extras" that they need. In fact due to all the budget cuts, we are running very low on essential supplies such as pencils, crayons, scissors, erasers, and even multipurpose paper. Thus, ink for copy machines has been deemed "non-essential" .

My Project

Having color ink will allow me to print can print color pictures to enhance my lessons. Seeing vivid and colorful pictures, photographs, and clip art leads to great discussions about the images. We have found that students who participate in "Gallery Walks" have higher vocabulary development and greater oral skills than students who do not participate in the "walks." Black and white pictures are ok but not preferred. It is sometimes hard to distinguish what the image is on a black and white and details are very hard to see as well. I hope to continue our "gallery walks" using color pictures if this project is funded.

Color pictures are important to my students because they are a catalyst to discussion time.

The more colorful and detail a picture is, the more oral language and vocabulary development that we will have. Please help my second language learners by supporting this project.
