Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I work on the southwest side of Chicago in a low-income area. For some students, my books are the only books they have access to. In my class this year, my focus has been to promote reading simply for pleasure. We begin each class with silent reading and my students love to read when they are truly engaged in a text. I cannot tell you how many times I have to tell my students to put their books away when they are truly invested in the plot and reading what matters to them.

These books are a sense of escape for some of my students and many of my students and their families do not have the means to purchase what seem like luxury items.

I love that they look forward to my daily reading and are checking out books from me. My library is becoming bare while my students are constantly giving me recommendations for texts they would like to see next on my shelves. The books I have chosen on this list have been hand-selected by my students themselves. They are as unique as my students and most are graphic novels to support my ESL students as they are visual learners.
