Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school, located by the famous Bronx Zoo, is filled with the the laughter and smiles of our beautiful Pre-k to 8th grade students. But there are some children, our exceptional students, who face many obstacles and challenges at school and within their communities. This wonderful group of exceptional children won't let anything get in their way of learning and having fun while they do so.

Our pre-K to 8 school is comprised of the most amazing students who are determined to succeed academically regardless of any circumstances they may encounter in their lives, communities and school.

Many of our exceptional needs students must contend with various disabilities ranging from learning and speech delays to intellectual disabilities. They need support to help them succeed.

As part of a Title I school, the majority of these students' families have great financial needs. Our students are in need of basic services and qualify for the free or reduced-price lunch program. Recognizing these needs, our teachers turn to donors like you to help us provide basic supplies for our children. Every donation directly helps these students!

My Project

My students are in a self-contained special education class and are participating in my class through remote learning while a few others are accessing our remote classes from the school building, due to teacher shortage. It has been very difficult for them to adjust to seeing their teacher on a screen, but I can't see them! When you use present mode on Google Classroom, you no longer can see your Google Meets.

Students are raising their hands and answering questions but I can't see them!

This causes so much frustration as they don't understand that my screen is completely taken over by the presentation, but on their end they can view my screen on theirs and they view my meets feed which shows my face. I want to be able to lower their frustrations by having an additional monitor. One for presenting and another will be logged in to Google Meets or Zoom. This way, I can see my students reactions, good or bad, to what I'm teaching. I can see them raising their hand, see who is responding and especially who has disappeared. It's also a matter of safety. If I can see my students, I can ensure they are present during lessons, are not engaging in any type of inappropriateness or help ease them if they look overwhelmed or distressed.

This particular monitor will be used remotely, then transferred back to school when in-person is safe and schools reopen. This way, regardless if I am in-person or remote, there will be an additional monitor available for students to interact with me visually, regardless of my presentations being shared on a specific screen.
