Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Budget cuts to education have never been more real than they are today. As we face losses in elective courses as well as programs in the arts, music and physical education, it is almost preposterous to expect the school budget to absorb improvements or enhancements to classroom technology.

My students are typical urban high school juniors and seniors in one of the last large comprehensive public high schools in our school system; our population is a little over 4,000 students.

Like most people their age, they are highly tech-savvy and require a lot stimulus. In order to hold their attention, lessons have to be a fair balance between conventional and innovative methods. Our school community is ethnically diverse, and to be a standout student among each other is enough of a challenge because of the large student body. They face setbacks and cutbacks that resonate in school systems throughout our country, but I'm hopeful that with the right support they can still be motivated to succeed.

My Project

Overall, my students are all highly energetic young men and women who thirst for knowledge, but sometimes lose sight of the importance of foundational skills. By having a projector in the classroom I would be able to add new dimensions to my literature lessons and literacy workshops. The conventions of standard English can be challenging to teach to a generation that is highly visual, but a projector would help to bridge that gap in instruction. In addition, it would facilitate student-led presentations as an alternative form of assessment and also create opportunities for my students to take ownership of their education.

A projector in my classroom would be used to serve the needs of approximately 150 students throughout the day for a full school year.

Furthermore, the proper care would secure the use of this equipment for years to come and as a result, the impact of this equipment will be far reaching.
