Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My first grade class is located in a low income community. The students have a large range of needs as well as diverse support systems.

My students love to see themselves and people they know in pictures. They are also very open to dramatic play. However, when it comes to writing, they need some motivation.

We have used pictures cut from old magazines as inspiration to writing and the kids were thrilled! I believe that they will practically beg to write when they are allowed to use authentic pictures taken by themselves. The Kodak Easy Share camera is a very user friendly camera for the kids. They can use the pictures to create a poem, story or letter. And with the printer dock, they wouldn't have to wait for me to go somewhere else during plan times or after school to print the pictures. It could all happen in a matter of minutes right there in the class while the creative moment is fresh! They could take pictures of science experiments, models of good behavior or as documentation of "great moments in first grade". Their pictures will be used as part of their "published" work and displayed proudly throughout the school. The possibilities are endless when it comes to what we could do with this.

You will make it possible for writing to become very purposeful and meaningful to my students. It will be "theirs" and that means a lot.
