My Students

I teach musical theater in East Los Angeles to Title I students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade in an after-school program. Our students are brimming with curiosity and enthusiasm as they learn to dance, sing, and act. English is the second language for the majority of our students, all of them low income, and all of them qualify for the free lunch program.

We are a public, inner-city school district with limited resources, lacking some of the tools to match the unsurpassed enthusiasm our students and families have for engaging in musical theater.

Musical theater benefits our students by building their self confidence, learning to work collaboratively, developing their use of language, and reasoning, while improving communication and social interaction skills. We work hard to ensure the theater students have access to adequate resources, and microphones are badly needed for our April productions.

My Project

My Project

Musical theater has a strong impact on our elementary students who have little exposure to the world of musicals, and theater production outside of school.

This past year they have learned to develop communication skills, and to work in teams toward a common goal. Their language skills, self esteem, and self confidence grew noticeably. We found that our students who had participated in our theater program experienced improved reading comprehension, and were more engaged in their learning.

These students gained confidence in expressing themselves effectively, while improving their English language skills. Students who participated in the musical discovered their hidden talents as they became more involved. 

The equipment we are requesting, speakers and microphones, will greatly improve the audio portion of our production as our student performers can be heard properly. Proper microphones can be placed much closer to the person singing, or speaking, conveying clear and quality sound to our audience through audio speakers. This would greatly improve the appreciation of our performances. The students are eager for our next production, Aladdin this April.
