Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Picture this! In the back corner of the classroom, four students sit around a table, carefully tracking the words with their eyes and finger of one of their favorite stories. They laugh and comment at the pictures and look up to see if their friends are laughing. At the end, they draw a picture.

Our classroom has 12 children with special needs ranging from Autism, Cognitively Delay, Learning Disability, ADHD, to Language Delays.

They are active, curious, and learn best when they are in self-directed, hands on activities. That is our model in our brand new public elementary school in NY. We are working hard to bridge the gaps between our budget deficient and what our children need to become independent readers. It is very important that children enjoy reading and look forward to it. A listening center can provide children with this opportunity!

My Project

A listening center has a tremendous amount of benefit in early childhood classrooms. One of the most important skills a young child can learn is to re-tell a story in sequence. This can only be achieved through listening and engaging with the story time after time again. This listening center will allow children to independently listen to stories, which is particularity important in our class because all my students have language delays. By listening to language over and over, in a specific context, they can acquire new language. Furthermore, the structure I will implement at the listening center will encourage students to 1)self-regulate and 2)socialize. For example, students will be taught how to wait until every friend has their headphones on to start the CD. This may seem easy, but my students struggle to control impulse and interact with each other.

A listening center will help students read stories, re-tell stories, and equally as important, work in a group! Our classroom can't establish a listening center without your generous funding! Lastly, the listening center will be shared with all kindergarten classrooms. Over 90 students will benefit from the listening center.
