My Students

I have the pleasure to work with an engaged and excited group of students! My students love to work together, collaborate, write, and make PowerPoint or Keynote presentations.

This year each student selected their favorite poem that they wrote and created a PowerPoint with images and the words of the poem.

The students presented these on our school auditorium's screen at a Poetry Soiree that parents and family attended. The one resource we needed, but didn't have was a portable sound system so we could practice using a microphone, and we could also present the PowerPoints to our classrooms.

My students are sweet, caring, hardworking, creative, and an excitable group of 25 third grade students in sunny Los Angeles. Over 32% of the students at our school qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, and everyone receives free breakfast daily. Our school believes in integrating the arts into our academic lessons because we feel this taps into all the students' interests. My students speak English at school, and many speak Spanish, Tagalog, or another language at home. We are a wonderful mix of cultures, and we support each other as we grow and learn.

My Project

Let's face it - students love using technology. One way I integrate technology into our classroom is by having the students write poetry and then create a PowerPoint to accompany the poem. That way everyone can read the poem as it is projected and see the visuals my students added to their presentation. My students love practicing using a microphone, but our current classroom sound system is no longer functional. I have requested a portable sound system with a microphone so my students can practice their poetry presentations and also bring their presentations to other classrooms. Another reason we would love having this sound system is so we can choreograph original dances to music and perform the dances on the playground or in the school auditorium.

Another way that we integrate art with technology is by making a cut paper animated movie.

My students read the novel, Poppy, this year and added their own scenes and dialogue. They recorded their voices using GarageBand and are now in the process of filming the movie using cut paper animation. This means the students draw and illustrate the characters and the backgrounds and then film subtle movements, one click at a time. When we speed up the individual photographs in iMovie, the characters are animated.

My students love this process, but we don't currently have enough tripods so each team can film at the same time. I have requested two tripods and a special iPad holder so we can have 2 more teams photographing in the classroom.

Your help donating to this project means that my students can use their creative juices making movies, acting through voiceovers, drawing and coloring all the movie scenes, and performing their original poems with a sound system.
