My Students

I am very lucky that I have several laptops in my classroom. However, the headphones that I have to go with the laptops are not the best quality. They also do not have microphones attached. With a classroom of 23 students and 1 teacher, it can get pretty noisy!

I teach a 1st grade class of 24 awesome children in a low-income high-need school.

My class is made up of a diverse group of children ready to learn. My class has a wide range of academic skills: from children with little background knowledge due to limited experiences to gifted and talented students who are working 1-2 grades above level! I have children that come to school without any school supplies or lunch money; 67% of my school is on the free or reduced lunch program.

My Project

I am asking for headphones with attached microphones so my students can share their stories! When asking for my students to share or make connections, I could spend all day listening. With these headphones, my students will now be able to record their stories for others to listen. I have tried using separate microphones, but first graders are so new to technology that they have a hard time managing everything; from the mouse, to the keyboard, to the headphones, and the microphone. If the microphone is attached, that is one less thing to worry about!

Over the last three and a half years, I have had several projects funded through DonorsChoose and every time a new package arrives, my students are more excited than the last time something arrived!

They cannot believe that people they have never met would be so generous. Not only would this be a great feeling for my students to know that people care, but it is a great learning opportunity. They will be able to use this gift to improve their academics, especially in reading.
