My Students

My high school is in an urban location in Richmond, VA. The make-up of our students is extremely diverse and predominantly qualifies for free or reduced-price lunch. I am a special education teacher that collaborates in a general education classroom. I am teaching English 11 this year and I am excited to get to know them, albeit through social distancing, and help them establish a love of reading and writing. Most of my students are technologically savvy as they are attached to their cellphones but often don't know how to expand that skill in the classroom.

I would like to be able to offer them a way to decrease or remove outside stressors so that they can focus while in my classroom.

Using journaling and writing prompts, I would like to be able to address their social-emotional levels while also preparing for standardized testing and real-world experiences. If you can not connect to what you feel and share that, how can you interview well or write a personal statement or resolve conflicts effectively?

My Project

Having tools in the classroom to help students who struggle with English as a second language or have processing issues to translate text or be able to dictate what they want to say when they can’t write it for themselves is a tremendous benefit!! A significant percentage of my classroom students are ESOL students; they often have educational plans that require specific supports and not just having books or documents in Spanish. Often because of their unique dialect, they need the ability to translate while working on their school device without switching screens. An iPad will provide them with that ability. It will also allow students with processing issues to be able to dictate their thoughts or answers and a teacher can print them out!
