Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a teacher in a low-income school, I work with students who are faced with many economic and emotional challenges both in and out of the classroom. My campus is a Title I school where the majority of the students are considered at risk. My class consists of bilingual students that are learning to speak, read, and write English and Spanish. Although many of my students struggle with the English language, they come to school every day eager to learn. Despite their challenges, they work hard to achieve academically.

My Project

For the past several months, I’ve been teaching virtual and face to face simultaneously. While I would love to have all my students face to face and teach them in a traditional setting, respecting their parent’s concerns about health and safety is very important, especially during this Pandemic. I teach 24 third-graders who attend class daily despite challenging circumstances. Even though this hybrid teaching method has been a challenge, my goal is to have all students hear and understand my lessons clearly while I am presenting.

During this Pandemic, we have approached lots of obstacles.

Our biggest obstacle has been the difficulty in verbal communication during virtual instruction due to the noise distractions in student’s homes and in the classroom. The students and I get frustrated when we are asked multiple times to repeat what we are saying. Being able to hear and understand each other clearly all the time while blocking all forms of distractions is a challenge. This challenge could easily be resolved if the teacher had a set of Apple AirPods and all students a set of quality headphones. Being able to clearly hear and understand my students without having to be glued and speaking to the computer, while helping the students in the classroom would be a blessing. Furthermore, having every student with a set of headphones, will allow them the ability to share their thoughts and ideas, focus, concentrate and engage in quality digital learning assignments without worrying about all that extra noise and chatter. There is no doubt that with these resources we will be able to communicate successfully.
