Our high school school is an urban high-needs small school school currently located within an existing, under-performing school. This is our second year, but we hope to expand to a 6-12 school with an emphasis on international affairs. I am currently the only language teacher, teaching 9th and 10th French and ESL, since French is the language of diplomacy.

Being a small school has its privileges, but it also has its disadvantages. For language classes, there is no language lab, and because I am the only language teacher at this school, my class sizes are quite large. I have over 30 students in a language class, and because of its sheer size, I am unable to hear the students on a daily basis to see if their speaking skills are improving. The students are quite excited and interested to learn French, but much of the emphasis right now is on listening, reading, and writing. Speaking is done rather generally, and I have very little time to hear what the students can say.

I've broken up my classes into 8 groups of four, and assigned group work. One idea I've had is to have a digital recorder assigned to each group where the students can record themselves, a conversation, a skit they come up with, so that I can assess their speaking skills and have them be speaking during the entire course of a classroom session.

Many people consider learning language to be a luxury, but research has come to show that learning a second language can enhance the learning of other subjects. My students are eager to learn French, but simply lack the "face" time to actually speak it. They can repeat after me in large groups, but it's an entirely different skill to speak on your own from what you've learned. Your help will enable students to be empowered to be our future diplomats, ambassadors and world-wide citizens.
