Can You Hear Me Now?

We need 15 tan headset microphones for our transmitters so the microphone won't be seen when we wear them during our musical.

About My Students

My students are talented young adults who dedicate their time before and after school to our many school ensembles, including Jazz Ensemble, Symphonic Band, and Marching Band. We participate in two competitions each year; one for our state and one in the Northeast Region. My students are age eleven to fourteen and at a time in their lives when they can be distracted with many things, they focus their skills into music making. We proudly have one of the best music programs in New York City and wish to supply our students with everything they deserve, and more!

My school prepares a Spring Musical once a year and each year it's a completely student engaged activity. Students are actors, singers, dancers, sound engineers, light technicians, and pit band members! You name it, they do it! The team work that develops during the five months of preparation is something you can't explain. The closest thing you can compare it to is a family; a group of people who have ups and downs and our love and respect for one another helps us overcome any challenges along the way.

Something that I noticed during this year's performance was the microphones we currently have are a distraction to the performance and it seems that many student performers agree.

In Their Own Words

We were involved in this year's production of Hairspray Jr. and worked really hard for our shows. We performed 5 shows during one week. By the last night when we performed for our parents, some of us saw that the microphones we have got in the way of the show. They are big and bulky and are very distracting. Theater is supposed to bring you into the show and all we could do was stare at the black microphones sticking out of each actors' face.

A small group of us searched the Internet for our best option to solve this problem and this is what we've found. We don't have to purchase a whole new microphone and transmitter set, which is really expensive, we can actually purchase just the microphone. We think the best option is to invest in thinner, tan-colored microphone that is less visible on the face of an actor.

This is an important change in the Spring Musical performance because it will allow the audience to full immerse in the world that the actors are creating. This year two scenes had a kiss between characters Tracy and Link. In a few attempts to do a stage kiss, the microphone was tapped by the actors' hands and a loud sound was echoed through the sound system. The second time the kiss was attempted, the microphone was knocked off Tracy's ear. These are things that can be avoided if we purchased thinner, more discreet microphones. It will improve our performances drastically.
