My Students
My school is in a low-income, high needs part of Queens, so when my 6th grade students learned that they had been granted new technology this year, they were THRILLED! For many of them, access to these devices at school is the only exposure and experience they have with technology - period. That being said, our use of these devices has not been as effective as we had hoped due to the lack of headphones and usb drives - small, yet vital accessories that my students can not afford on their own. Not having these items has resulted in a very noisy and distractible classroom environment. My students deserve the freedom to explore all that technology has to offer and work with some autonomy without having to worry about disrupting the learning of the child next to them!
My Project
In order to help my students become self-sufficient, responsible users of technology, they need access to their own pair of headphones and a USB drive on which they can save their work as they go. As a class, we are fortunate to have daily access to a computer cart (and hopefully, in a few weeks, an i-pad cart), which enables students to utilize academic online tools and resources such as i-Ready (ELA & Math instruction), GO Math, Mathletics, EPIC Books, Google Earth, and much more! While this technology is GREAT, students often have a very difficult time focusing on their own work on their own device (audio, videos, etc) because other students are doing similar work and the clash of sounds creates a very unproductive, noisy environment! Headphones are the simple, yet powerful solution! Equally important are USB drives for each student. In our Reader's and Writer's workshops, we are constantly moving from one task to another and students often work at their own pace. USB drives would give each child the freedom and autonomy to save work as they go and develop a sense of responsibility for their work time and growth as a student.
