This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach to a diverse group of students from Grades Pre-K to 5. Situated in a high poverty area, these kids try to escape the daily adversities that are the realities of their lives. Most of these students come to school with no supplies to help them absorb the knowledge that the world has to offer.

As a computer teacher who teaches to almost 600 students a week, it is important to supply them with what they need to learn in school.

My students include English Language Learners (ELL), students with learning and/or emotional disabilities, and students with deficient reading skills. Since their parents are busy struggling to keep up with buying food or paying the rent, owning a computer, or exposing their children to what technology has to offer, is the last thing on their mind.

My Project

I would like to supply my students with headphones to be used in the computer lab. Because of the volume of students that visit the computer lab, the headphones are constantly broken due to wear and tear. I would like to get good quality and comfortable headphones for the students to use daily. Since many of them do not have the privilege to appreciate technology at home, I would like to give them the opportunity at school. I would like the younger students and below grade level readers (including ELL and learning disabled students) to learn important reading skills with audio books and songs. I would like my older students to watch science videos that would support them in the understanding of informational text as required by the Common Core Learning Standards.

I truly believe that all students can learn.

I have taught in the gifted and talented classes as well as the collaborative team teaching classes where a part of the student body is special needs students. No matter where their abilities lie, I know that all students can accomplish their goals if given the proper resources and tools. What better way to show them than by offering them a computer with a proper headphone?
