My Students

I teach in a 6:1:1 Kindergarten classroom in a District 75 school in Staten Island, New York. District 75 provides highly specialized instructional support for students with significant challenges, such as: Autism Spectrum Disorders, significant cognitive delays, emotional disturbances, sensory impairments, and/or multiple disabilities.

They are fearless when it comes to technology and, as children of the 21st century, they need to be prepared to use a variety of tools to engage their world.

Many of my students come from diverse backgrounds and have many different educational needs. We are part of a larger school that celebrates inclusion. This year, I will have 3 lovely Kindergarteners!

My Project

The use of headphones while working on a tablet is essential. It is extremely hard for my students with Autism Spectrum Disorders to focus with other background noise. People with ASD process information slightly differently, and one of the common effects of that is extreme sensitivity to sounds. Hypersensitivity to sound can show up in different ways but the common factor is the person is a lot more aware of sounds, even very quiet ones, than a neurotypical person in the same environment.

Headphones help to block out outside noise, which in turn will help my young students keep the focus on the task at hand.

Headphones help in making you feel as if you are in isolation even when people are around you. Once you put headphones on, you get into your own world. All the things which were distracting you, just get eliminated. Headphones can help calm my students down especially for those who find crowded spaces and noise a source of anxiety. For some, putting on noise-cancelling headphones is enough because they desire quietness and calmness, some prefer to put on music. It all comes down to individual preferences.
