My Students

Fredrick Douglas once said, "Once you learn to read, you will be forever free." I believe this with all my heart. First grade is a prime age for building the foundation to read. In my first grade classroom, students from low income to middle class are encouraged to be read or be read to on a daily basis. And at this age, they have a hunger for stories. Their eyes light up when being read to. Their minds engage and they are taken off with their imaginations to a world outside our classroom.

There is nothing more rewarding than getting to watch children gain a love for reading.

I am excited to watch them grow a love for books. There are so many wonderful selections written by amazing authors and I want every opportunity to let them explore those texts.

My Project

I am a twenty-two year teacher and have never had a quality listening center for my students. I am sad to admit that, but it's true. With a small amount of money in my teacher account each year, I have never had the funds to purchase a quality center. I have relied on hand-me-downs from retiring teachers or cheap, easily broken sets from local retail stores. With a good wireless listening center, there will be no more tangled headsets, determining which hole to plug into, or wondering whether or not the listening station will even work.

Having a quality listening center with a variety of books on CD will be such a blessing to both my students and me.

We use the listening center on a daily basis. I spend more time getting up and down from my reading groups to troubleshoot the listening center than I even want to think about. The students at that station get frustrated having to wait for me to get there, the students at my table get frustrated having to wait for me to get back to the reading group and I get frustrated having to continue to fix and replace broken systems, non-working headphones and hunting for books for students to listen to. With a wireless listening center, designed specifically for classroom use, students will actually have time to listen to stories on CD and time to do responses to the books. Plus, there will be no tangled lines, students can sit further apart and not worry about spending the first 5 minutes untangling their headphone cords. Having more books to choose from will also be a blessing, as I am having them use the same books for two weeks at a time right now. No more "Can you hear it now?"
