Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I was lucky enough this year to join an amazing school. In my art classes, students are provided with new avenues for expressing who they are, how they see the world and what they aspire to be. Every day, it is a great joy to guide my students to find confidence in their own creativity.

My 9th and 10th grade students are taking painting, 2D and 3D art classes.

They attend this NYC public charter school for children in northern Manhattan—Washington Heights and Inwood. My 10th graders were the very first class of 5th grade students who came to our school when we opened the doors in 2010. We serve grades 5-10, growing a year until we reach grade 12. Many of my students came to the school 4 to 5 years behind their peers. Most of my students speak English as a second language—80% are from homes where Spanish is their primary language—and 20% require Special Education services for emotional and/or learning challenges. Our first graduating class will be in 2018 and it is our goal to graduate 100% of our students and ensure they have multiple pathways to succeed in the future. That’s a big task since NYC’s graduation rates are low, particularly for its most vulnerable learners: a 45% graduation rate for Special Ed students and 48% for English language learners.

My Project

As the visual and new media arts teacher, I can assure you that my students need and will use acrylic paint in their artwork. My classes are Empowering Students Through Art. The paint supplies allow my students to express themselves in meaningful ways, to be recognized for their creativity and interests, and to demonstrate their strengths. Many of my students struggle in other academic areas, especially our English language learners, and these are the children who often find success in the arts. I love to recycle and teach the importance of reuse in our society. In our 3D class, students were given a box that the school’s Chromebooks arrived in (thanks to a grant) and are tasked with designing an object of their choice using the box, but the design needs to be clear what it is the box will hold. The students will gesso their box then use acrylic paint to help illustrate the theme of their object.

When complete, the students will present their project to their peers and their work will be displayed in the classroom and provide a contextual resource for future class discussions.

It is my intent that each art project leaves a lasting impression on each student and becomes a major part of their education and success at school.
