Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Many of my middle school students complain about reading for a half hour each night. They have excuses to try to get out of homework. They always want to know why we don't have shortened school days (for staff development) every week. They get all worked up when they have to run the mile in gym class.
But some kids are different.
A special group of kids I coach has been staying after school and coming on weekends since September, training. They have their eye on something bigger, something few people thought they could do. They've been training for the LA Marathon, preparing to run 26.2 miles through the streets of Los Angeles.
These kids have captured the fascination of the entire school. While the school has struggled through its initial growing pains (we're a new public school in a challenging neighborhood of South LA), these kids have run in practice all the way to Staples Center and the Hollywood Sign. While many kids around the school have ditched class, these kids have run around USC eagerly and dropped in on college lectures.
From our first practices where we ran only 10 minutes, we've built up to finishing 13 mile races in Orange County and an 18 mile race in the Valley. And now Danny, Francisco, Isaiah, Ulices, and Anayessi are ready for the marathon.
I'd like your help to reward them after they finish.
I would like to commemorate their accomplishments by presenting each student with a plaque with their official finisher's photo and engraved with their names, along with a plaque for the school with a team picture. Neither the families nor the coaches have the money to do this on our own (the coaching position is unpaid, despite the months of work and the expenses involved with food, supplies, transportation, etc.) Thus, your help will enable students and the school to always remember what is possible and they can overcome all challenges to accomplish amazing things in their lives.
