Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students at my school are seen one way by outsiders and an entirely different way from the staff. Outsiders see them as trouble makers who are lazy and caught up in bad things. Our staff sees them as people whose lives have been wrought with a multitude of obstacles, fear, abuse, and neglect that made learning a low priority next to surviving. We see people of strength who recognized that a traditional school was not a great fit, who did not drop out and instead, made their way to our school of 125 students and seven teachers who work tirelessly to help them see their potential, feel valued and help them to reach their goals of graduation while highlighting real and achievable avenues to take them into the workforce so they can see a way out of their current situation and to a way of independence in their future.

My Project

Something wonderful and unusual has happened in my classroom as of late. Because of the generosity from donors choose donators, I have been able to teach some new titles this year. We started with "Long Way Down," and followed that up with, "For Everyone," both by Jason Reynolds. I was really nervous to try to teach books written in poetic verse but instead, my students love them. And let me be clear, these are NOT your typical kids that want to read anything at all. These books are written in verse so they are quick to read but filled with intense topics to discuss that my students can really relate to. We finish "For Everyone" soon and the students are already asking what is next. I asked them what they wanted to read later in the semester and had them look over various descriptions of YA novels in verse. Students read summaries and then had to rally for their title. A vote was taken and the students were quite passionate...

"We really want to read, 'The Poet,' by Elizabeth Acevedo next!!" I had them help me with the proposal writing to show them that their desires can be turned to words and sometimes that equals success.

So here's to hoping we are successful and get to read this novel later in the semester.
