My Students

Our school is located in Los Angeles, California just a couple miles away from USC. (Go Trojans!) We are Title I school. Our students receive free meals. Almost all of our students are minority students and English Learners.

We are a Transitional Kindergarten, Kindergarten, 1st grade, and 2nd grade classroom (yes, you read right.

I'm responsible for teaching 4 different grade levels.. in one classroom!) My students are on the Autism Spectrum. Autism Spectrum Disorder is a developmental disorder that affects learning, communication, and behavior. Students with autism also face challenges with social skills. Some students have very limited language and may exhibit challenging behaviors. This is all apparent in our classroom.

My goal is to give these students the hands-on, real-world, and enriching learning experiences, both academic and nonacademic, that they need and deserve in order to succeed in and outside of the classroom. I strongly believe in building independence at an early age.

Our students come from different backgrounds, cultures, and have different likes/dislikes and needs, but in our room, we are all learners. Each day opens us to new experiences and adventures. Our days together are never the same. Their learning differences and remarkable characteristic traits are

My Project

There were multiple times during the school year that I found a cute and creative art project for my students but I couldn't fully execute it because I didn't have paint. The thought of 4 to 8 year olds painting would make some run for the door but I welcome it!

With your donation to purchase Crayola washable paint and painting materials such as aprons, paint palettes, and paint pads, my students would have the opportunity to express themselves in an alternative way.

A majority of my students are developing their fine motor skills, pre- writing skills such as scribbling and meticulously tracing lines, and letter and number formation. Having the students paint instead of using a traditional writing utensil would make the experience of writing way more fun. Research states that when learning is fun, students are engaged; when students are engaged, more in-depth learning occurs. Stated in a fancier science-er way, "Classroom experiences that are free of intimidation may help information pass through the amygdala's affective filter. In addition, when classroom activities are

pleasurable, the brain releases dopamine, a neurotransmitter that stimulates the memory centers and promotes the release of acetylcholinem, which increases focused attention."

I would love for my students to be able to paint at school. I know that it would promote enriching learning experiences.
