My Students

Help me foster a love for reading in my students. Reading a great book can bring so much joy to a student. Being exposed to rich text also helps students grow as writers. My students are going to soar as readers and writers, but I need your help.

I am a 5th grade teacher in California.

I work with predominately African American and Hispanic students. My school is in the inner city in a high poverty area, so the children that I teach do not always have the opportunities that others might. We use the Open Court reading program which is good for teaching younger readers, but for older students it has many deficits. Our reading program is scripted and is lacking of rich text needed for older students. Students do not get the opportunity to read whole texts with character and plot development which can foster a love of reading.

My Project

In my classroom, I attempt to find corresponding chapter books from the Open Court anthologies for students to read. I form literature circles with these students. However, copies of these books are in short supply. Having class sets (30 copies) of texts such as "Class President" and "Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes", would help to make more enriching reading experiences for my students. They deserve to have opportunities to get excited about a text and to have discussions about the literary elements that good books share.

Your contribution will provide my students with the rich text they need to better develop their reading and writing ability.

You will help me to help them develop a LOVE for reading.
