I teach second grade at a Title I school in rural part of Southwest Oklahoma. I have students on every ability level, from special needs to above average, and my goal is to foster a love of reading in each and every one regardless of their reading abilities.
I believe that reading is the core skill to all other academic areas. The key to creating a good reader is to first get the students interested in reading. Many of my students want to read the books that their classmates are enjoying, but are hindered by a book's difficulty or their own comprehension problems. Students then give up feeling that they “can’t read that book”. My solution is to provide students with an opportunity to experience the magic of a good book that they are unable to read independently.
My students need a mp3 player to be able to listen to a chapter book while they read it. By listening to the book as they read along, they will gain a much needed feeling of success in reading. Also, research has shown that if a student hears AND reads a text, they are much more likely to remember and comprehend the content. Listening to a book on a mp3 player allows students the option of reading along with the narrator, and it increases their comprehension of the book's storyline.
Your support for this project makes it possible for struggling readers to enjoy reading books while they are strengthening their reading skills. You can be responsible for helping these bright second graders fall in love with reading! Thank you for your help!
