Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This summer, my students have the amazing opportunity to explore Monument Valley, study U.S. History up close, and provide service to the community. We are ready to go... but we need camping gear!

My high schoolers are among the most at-risk in our city.

Most of them have never been camping. They have never experienced real quiet. They have never slept on the earth or woken up for the sunrise. They haven't counted the stars in a truly dark sky or even savored a s'more. Most of my students have spent the bulk of their lives within a few city blocks. They struggle with school due to economic challenges, language challenges, learning challenges, or family challenges. They have had few experiences where learning was authentic, relevant, meaningful, or fun. At the alternative high school, we broaden their horizons. Each year, I take students on a service-learning camping trip to Monument Valley. Students take a field study in U.S. History as we explore the Navajo Nation. Students develop lasting cross-cultural connections as we meet new friends, eat new foods, hear new songs, and see amazing new sights. We serve the Navajo community. Last year, students even got to shear a sheep!

My Project

In the past, some of my students have turned down the opportunity to participate in this field study because they didn't have something as simple as a sleeping bag. They don't have tents, flashlights, or mess kits. As much as their families would like to help, they just don't have the extra money it takes to purchase equipment. We were able to borrow these items from staff at our school, but those students who had to borrow felt a little embarrassed. Your generous donation will ensure that no student will ever have to miss out on this opportunity for lack of material resources. These supplies will be added to the school library catalog. With a dedicated, uniform set of camping supplies, none of our children will have to stress about borrowing or being different.

We see dramatic improvement in student behavior and performance with students who have participated in this field study.

Students become more self-sufficient and more likely to make a positive investment in their own communities. Suddenly, learning has relevance and tangible, real world applications. Students experience America's natural wonders and learn to be a steward of the nature and their own lives. With your help, my students will experience the true joy of learning and service.
