My Project

In the age of social media, a time when many young people curate and edit their personas online, these cameras and the images they produce will push students to work in a medium that is more closely connected to film photography. Although there is a digital component to this camera, students will still be challenged to be selective and intentional about what they photograph and the order they choose to print their images, as the materials are limited, and will be printed in strips for display. This medium of photography differs from the phone as it challenges students' authenticity. Unable to rely on apps that can edit and adjust the "reality" of a photograph, students will have to be more thoughtful and considered in their captures. Furthermore, because these images print in black and white, they will be pushed to think about color, light, and tone in a new and challenging way.

Through the process of memorializing and printing these photographs, we aim to create a physical archive of what it means to be a high school student living in Philadelphia in 2024.

This is of the utmost importance because although young people have long been the subject of the photographers's lens, historically they have rarely been in control of their own photographic narratives. What we aim to create with these cameras will be an assertion of visual power and ownership, one that is a political and radical act of reclamation and storytelling.
