My Students

My school is a consolidated school district that covers small, rural communities, and quiet farms. Some of my students travel long distances to school; others live right down the street. In a small school, students have the opportunity to try new skills without tremendous pressure. They multitask. They have big hearts and want to help others. They like to try new things. My students are interested in learning how to communicate with a broader audience. They want to learn about writing scripts, filming, and being heard.

COVID-19 has impacted their learning in many ways.

It has shown them how important it is to reach out to others and stay in touch. At the same time, the pandemic has emphasized how hard that can be to do. Between quarantines and virtual days, it is hard to focus on any type of learning beyond the basics. Too often we have had to rely on worksheets and review projects we can do at home.

My Project

This semester, my speech and drama students have started two projects: a daily news broadcast that lets them research, write, and produce a news show about district events and a mini-series tv show that they are writing. Both of these are giving them the opportunity to write and learn about communication and film production. I have seen great improvement in their writing since we started these two projects. In light of COVID-19, the projects are also giving my students the skills to reach out and communicate with quarantined and virtual students and other members of our school community.

We want to start filming and producing the scripts we have written, but we are limited in our supplies.

We have great audio solutions, but we need a better, more flexible camera. The Panasonic Camcorder I have requested will give us the mobility we need to reach out to a greater audience.
