Calming Sensory Room Supplies

My Project

COVID-19 has greatly impacted the social, emotional, and behavioral needs of all of our students, but especially our younger children in grades K-3. Our school serves children in grades K-8 through a Waldorf model. We tend to attract students who learn differently because of our whole child approach to education. Currently, approximately 20% of our population is identified as qualifying for special education services, ranging from mild/moderate to significant needs.

We created a sensory room a few years ago and it has made a huge difference for many of our students!

They are now able to make it successfully through the day with built in sensory/calming breaks. I've requested a Play House Cube and mat because our young students are often looking for small enclosed spaces to calm and we want to provide this for them in a safe way. The trampoline is a favorite option for some indoor movement. It is the most used piece of equipment in our sensory room and the one we currently have is over a year old and needs replaced. The Liquid Floor Tiles, Breathing Board, and Squish and Squeeze Sensory Beads all support calming and regulation. The floor tiles are especially appealing to our students on the Autism spectrum. The breathing board is a hands-on model for deep breathing when students need help calming. The sensory beads provide a calming activity for restless hands and the Alpha-Bots are another fun, hands-on activity that students can engage with while still working on letter identification and sounds. Lastly, our team of paraprofessionals and teachers are often putting on soft music for the students in this room and we would really benefit from a dedicated bluetooth speaker like the Echo Pop for them to use so they do not have to rely on cell phones.
