My Project

Calm-down corners allow students to be aware of their own emotions. My students come from a wide variety of backgrounds from all over the world. Some are experiencing school for the very first time. Having a comfy, safe and designated space in my classroom will provide them with an opportunity to learn how to identify their emotions so that they can better regulate them.

The calm-down corner will be a space in our classroom where students are able to take a few minutes to decompress, take a breath, and/or think about making different choices.

It will be especially helpful for those who have big feelings that interfere with their ability to focus, and give them a place to process those emotions with distraction or judgement.

Having these items will help me to create the space that is meant to be a supportive therapeutic environment, and will assist my students in acquiring skills in self-calming efforts and self regulation that they can transfer to their daily lives.
