This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Hi, everyone. Thank you for taking the time to read about my project. I have a 3rd- 5th grade moderate to severe classroom, on the alternate curriculum. While my students are amazing, they do have challenges in the area of social interactions, communication, restrictive and repetitive behaviors and have sensory needs.

While most of my students are on the spectrum, they range on the level of support they need during the school day.

While I adore all of them, as they have many strengths, I have a few students that require additional adult support, especially in moments of frustration. Communication is key, and that's what we continue to work on, yet I would like to create a safe place for my students to go when they need it. This is a place where they can be safe and feel safe, as I do have some students who will engage in self- injurious behaviors, by using a sensory mat or a cushioned area such as a seat or a sofa, students can de-escalate without harming themselves. By creating this calming corner, my students will have a safe place where they can go to in the classroom and identify what and how they are feeling. By using weighted vests, and having access to sensory items, my students can learn to self- soothe and regulate their emotions. Then through modeling and with adult support, students will learn strategies they can engage in when feeling a certain way and work on expressing their needs to then be able to return with the whole group and be ready to learn.
