My Students

I teach a special education/early childhood preschool program in a rural Utah town. My students consist of special education students, along with typically developing children who serve as peer models. I have quite the spectrum of ability levels in my classroom from differently-abled children who are experiencing their first time away from parents, all the way up to students who are reading on their own.

I love teaching a broad spectrum of students, who grow and learn together.

I think what I enjoy the most about children is their ability to explore the world around them and find wonder in their imaginations.

The reason I feel that our program is so special is that it is the only time that special education children will experience full inclusion with their typically developing peers. I have seen so many benefits for developing children as they learn and play with each other.

My Project

We would like to create a calming corner to give students a safe, soothing place to go when they’re feeling overwhelmed or upset. The welcoming nature-themed canopy will let children take a break in private, and the beanbag and soft pillows offer super-cozy seating in calming colors. As students relax, they can explore photo cards and simple paperback books that are perfect for helping them recognize and express their feelings. Plus, students can use calming sensory items including colorful gel-bead shapes, textured balls. We want to provide a portable lap desk with a sand timer so kids can monitor their time in the calming corner.
