My Project

There are 12 very important Kindergarten, 1st grade, and 2nd grade students in my class. We are learning how to communicate using our words and how to appropriately show our emotions. They are young learners with special needs and sometimes it is difficult for them to deal with big emotions like sadness, embarrassment, anger, and frustration. Social emotional learning, especially self-regulation, is a huge part of our day spent together and a calming area would help them process how they are feeling.

My students would greatly benefit from a specific and designated cool down/reflection area in our classroom.

In our calm area, I picture my students calming themselves down by drawing, coloring, reading books, keeping their hands busy with fidget toys and hands on activities and surrounded by calming posters and lights. They feel many emotions and sometimes have a challenging time identifying what they're feeling, processing their emotions, and how to calm themselves down. I tell my students that it is okay to feel sad, angry, jealous, frustrated, and hurt and that it is okay to mistakes; it is what we do with those emotions that is the most important part.
