it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students are enduring a very challenging time in educational history. They are eager to learn but have had to endure full-time virtual school, hybrid, and back to full-time in-person schooling. I have seen, now more than ever, the need to provide my students with strategies to help manage their emotions and promote mindfulness.
Sometimes my students need a break from the anxiety that can be caused in an academic and social setting.
I would love to have a designated calming area in my classroom where students can go to have a comfortable area to relax and be provided with strategies and resources to help them calm down if needed. This space will have pillows with positive messages, as well as large pillows and cozy chairs to sit on. It will have a shelf of books they can read to help them when they are feeling various emotions, such as anger and anxiety. They will enjoy the calming decorations of the plants, sand art, and wall lights. The light covers will provide a sense of calm throughout the room by lessening the harshness of the fluorescent lights. I also envision this area to be used proactively as a choice area to help them practice mindfulness activities.
