Calming Area

My Project

A calming area allows students to take a moment from their learning when their emotions become too much. During the school day, we are in one space with many different personalities and sometimes need a little space and time to gather our thoughts and emotions. Currently, my students will take a bathroom break, walk the halls, or just put their heads down on their desks when they need a little "time out." Having a designated place in the classroom will make taking these short time outs easier and more efficient. Just a quick three to five minute break would allow students to gain control of their emotions and re-engage with the learning in the classroom.

The products that I have selected will help my students by giving them a space and some materials to help them relax, reflect, and learn how to manage their emotions.

The table lamps will create a more relaxed environment for the whole class in general. The noise-cancelling headphones will help those that need a little more quiet than what a regular classroom can provide. The sensory toys and other items can be used in the calming area to help students regain control of their emotions.

Meeting the social and emotional needs of students has always been important, but since the pandemic, I have seen an increased need. More students are coming into the classrooms with trauma and other stressors. I hope that these additional materials will help us support and grow our future leaders!
