My Project

Many students at my continuation high school have been disproportionately impacted by adverse childhood experiences and come to us when they've been unable to find academic, and often social, success in a comprehensive high school setting. The pandemic exacerbated and complicated existing issues and inequities for many of the students who find themselves at our proverbial 'door'. Fortunately, our principal has worked hard to create a very nurturing and trauma-informed school environment where students have an opportunity to feel safe, seen, heard, and ultimately, succeed.

When I expressed an interest in creating a calming area at our continuation high school to promote students' socioemotional well-being, my principal was very supportive and identified a space for this project right away.

In putting together a list of materials for this project, I researched everything from what colors promote a calming atmosphere (blues and greens) to what type of seating can reduce stress (using rocking chairs can release endorphins which can improve mood and reduce stress). Should our school's vision for a calming area come to fruition, it will provide our resilient students with a calming space on campus where they can go to reduce stress, recharge, and practice coping skills that will help them thrive.
