This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students crave learning and positive attention. They want to be successful but some lack the interpersonal skills necessary to achieve both academic and social success. They want so much to do well, but sometimes struggle in how to do just that.

My wonderful students are often faced with stressful situations at home including hunger and violence that tends to cause anger and anxiety while at school.

They come from a highly low income area and many need the school's help in providing food on the weekends. Its hard to imagine how their home lives must be, and yet they come to school every day eager for someone to love and teach them. Some of my most challenging students are the ones who are not able to use words to express their feelings or calm themselves down. These are the students I desperately want to reach.

My Project

Children see trauma in the media such as violence, natural disasters and terrorism's today more than ever before. My students particularly see it in their personal lives as well. Some of my students have had more interaction with the police than I could ever dream. Research indicates that relaxation techniques and the Alive computer software program calms the brain and allows students to achieve their optimal learning potential given the proper tools. Once we have a computer and materials for a "calming" area I will be able to purchase the software to implement the "calming lab". I will implement these tools to students who struggle with anxiety and/or anger challenges.

My three main goals for implementing a calming lab is for students to be successful in school, improve socially and emotionally, and have fewer discipline referrals.

I believe a calming lab will significantly improve the lives of my students and will hopefully ripple through the school quickly! Your donation is the first step in making my dream a reality.
