My Students

We are a small town, rural high school. Our students are the pride of our school system. Students compete on all levels from local to national through athletics, FFA, FBLA, and BETA club activities. As a counseling assistant and mentor I get to see students grow mentally and physically over the years.

We have high expectations for our students, and we want them to leave high school fully prepared for whatever they have chose, whether it be college, vocational or straight into a career field.

This is our vision for our school: "Inspired to be the best through compassion, pride for our community, and passion for success!”

I am a mentor to a great group of seniors. I have been their mentor for the last 5 years, guiding them through their academics, working with parents, extracurricular decisions and now helping them with post high school career decisions. We meet weekly to review progress and also set and review short term and long term goals for the following week, semester and year.

My Project

This year has been more stressful for our kids and teachers than years before, and most likely it will continue to be that way. We have managed to stay in school with a virtual option, however, students honestly do not know from day to day when they are going to be quarantined and have to shift to online learning. In order to make this year more enjoyable we have created a mentor Friday each week where each staff member is a mentor to a group of about 20 kids. We spend the entire day having fun, catching up on work, etc. This has helped us continue to build relationships with our in-person and our virtual students. Throughout all of this my mentor group & my students are persevering by still putting forth their best effort daily despite not knowing what changes will happen tomorrow.

Even though some may seem to be thriving and resilient, anxiety and depression have been on the rise this year.

Mindfulness practices can help people manage stress, cope better with illness and reduce anxiety and depression. I would like to provide a mindful space for my students and mentees to calm down when overwhelmed or stressed here at school; a place where they can take a break and get away from the computer screen.

Since I'm the only counselor, a lot of times I am detained and not able to be with every student when they need me. This space would truly benefit all of our students, every day and especially on our mentor Fridays. Some items I'm including in this project such as the bean bag chair, the cots, and the light covers will be able to provide a calming atmosphere for all students and teachers as necessary.
