Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

The students at our high school are vibrant and full of life. The student body is diverse and full of potential. The student body operates as a family for the most part, with kids that are willing to lend a hand to their peers and staff members. Like most students, they have a hard transition back to school from COVID initiated virtual learning.

My Project

Creating a calm corner will give students who are upset or experiencing high levels of anxiety a place to calm themselves before making bad decisions. With our school moving towards restorative justice practices from punitive punishments, alternative methods for handling problematic behavior have to be implemented. The calm corner will be useful in avoiding major incidents by giving the student a place to go to calm down and think about their choices before making an emotionally driven bad behavior.

The items requested are all therapeutically suggested to help people calm down.

By using these items, a calm, safe, and soothing space will be available for students to come and calm down; it will also be used for a space to conduct peer mediation to aid in conflict resolution. The calm corner will aid in reducing out-of-school and in-school suspension, which results in lost class time.
